During the medieval period, especially in the Sindh region, Jainism thrived due to the patronage of wealthy Jain merchants. These merchants, who played a crucial role in the trade networks of the time, used their wealth to build temples and support religious activities. These temples were not only places of worship but also served as centers of learning, culture, and community life.
Kharvel’s reign is a testament to his commitment to Jainism, though he also respected other traditions. He organized councils of Jain ascetics and supported the compilation of Jain scriptures, such as the seven-fold Angas. He constructed shelters and provided tax exemptions for monks.
As a bridge between northern and southern India, Maharashtra has played a crucial role in the spread of Jainism from the north to the south. Jain missionaries from the north traveled through Maharashtra to reach the southern regions. The earliest known migration occurred in the 3rd century BCE, when Acharya Bhadrabahu and thousands of Jain monks journeyed from North India to Karnataka, passing through Maharashtra.
Vanraj Chavda’s connection with Jain monks was integral to his reign. His support for Jainism is well-documented and highlights his religious tolerance and patronage. Notably, Vanraj was influenced by Jain monks such as Shilgunsuri.
