Rajabai Clock Tower: The Iconic Landmark of Mumbai

Rajabai Clock Tower, an iconic clock tower in Mumbai, the financial capital of India, stands tall at 85 meters. This tower, situated on the University of Mumbai campus in South Mumbai, is renowned for its architectural beauty and historical significance. The tower features a large, ornate clock that has become a symbol of the university and a popular tourist attraction.

The History Behind the Rajabai Clock Tower

The story of Rajabai Tower is intertwined with the history of Mumbai and the legacy of a prominent 19th-century businessman, Premchand Roychand. Known as the “Cotton King” and the “Bullion King,” Premchand Roychand was the first Indian stockbroker and a founding member of the Bombay Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in Asia. His extraordinary financial prowess was exemplified by a famous single-day pay-in of Rs. 11.5 crore in the 19th century, equivalent to over 1000 crores today.

Who was Rajabai?

Rajabai, after whom the tower is named, was the mother of Premchand Roychand. The Roychand family were devout followers of Jainism. Rajabai was a staunch Jain who strictly adhered to the religious practice of not eating after sunset. Being blind, Rajabai relied on the clock tower’s chimes to keep track of time and ensure she could have her meals before sunset without assistance.

Sir George Gilbert Scott designed Rajabai Tower in the Venetian-Gothic style, constructing it between 1869 and 1878. The tower’s design reflects a blend of European Gothic and Indian architectural elements, making it a unique and beautiful structure.

Premchand Roychand funded the entire Rs. 200,000 construction costs on the condition that the tower be named after his mother.

Rajabai Tower on Postal Stamp

In 1957, to commemorate the centenary of Mumbai University, India Post issued a 10 New Paisa valued stamp featuring Rajabai Tower. This commemorative stamp highlighted the tower’s significance as an architectural and historical landmark.
